亞曼達伍茲（卡麥蓉狄亞茲 飾）是一家生意興隆的廣告公司女老闆，專門製作電影預告片，她居住在南加州。艾麗絲辛肯斯（凱特溫絲蕾 飾）則為倫敦的《每日電訊報》撰寫備受歡迎的婚姻專欄，她住在英國鄉間溫馨的小木屋。
雖然艾麗絲和亞曼達這兩名單身女子相隔六千英哩，但是她們都面對同一個問題：就是在耶誕節來臨之前，她們都決定和男朋友分手，而且她們也都沒有任何過節的心情。亞曼達想要趁這機會度個假，出去散散心，無意間上網查到交換住處的網站，覺得艾麗絲的英國鄉間小屋是讓她忘掉感情煩惱的好地方。於是在一時衝動之下，她們同意交換住處兩個星期。
艾麗絲抵達洛杉磯的那一天晴空萬里、舒爽宜人，她到了亞曼達的住處之後不久，就認識了一名好萊塢知名編劇亞瑟（艾李沃克 飾），以及和亞曼達前男友合作的電影配樂師麥爾斯（傑克布萊克 飾）。但是亞曼達到了英國卻吃了不少苦頭，因為英國的冬天天寒地凍，當她好不容易找到了艾麗絲的住處，艾麗絲英俊瀟灑的哥哥葛拉漢（裘德洛 飾）就來敲門。
在經過一連串出乎意料的事情之後，這一對單身女子都發現最棒的旅行就是拋開過去的包袱…
片中加州的部份綠意盎然、多彩多姿；相較之下，英國的部份就是非常鮮明的對比，因為英國冬天的室外場景都是一片白雪，但是艾麗絲的小木屋卻非常溫馨，充滿了各種色彩，亞曼達的家反而比較冷冽簡約，沒有太多的顏色。
本片有些對白，可讓人醒思，也讓人莞爾一笑：
